Pose of the Week: FireFly or Tittibhasana



Note: Consult a doctor before beginning any exercise regime

Pose type: Stretch, Balance, and Forward-Bend

Name: Firefly or Tittibhasana

This is a great pose for your kidneys and increasing balance

This posture helps open and activate, your Solar Plexus (Manipura) Chakras.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the arms, biceps, triceps, and legs

  • Stretches the thighs, hips, and hamstrings

  • Improves concentration


Cautions

  • Please consult with your physician and experience yoga teacher before attempting this if you have experience knee, ankle or shoulder injuries. Practice this with care and move slowly with control and listen to your body.

  • Also, avoid if you suffer from Obesity, frequent headaches, high or low blood pressure or asthma

 

To Access this Pose:

1. Start Standing Forward Fold with Your Feet shoulder length apart.


2. Bend your knees and grab a hold of one of your calves and snuggle it over your shoulder, then repeat with the other side.

Note: Your shoulders will round forward, but keep pushing them back against the thighs.

3. Place your hands flat (fingers pointing forward) on the ground behind your feet.

Note: Root into the floor with the base of your index fingers to protect your wrist.

4. Hug your upper thighs around your torso and squeeze. Sink your hips down while bending your elbows and create a seat to sit on (make sure they are pointing straight back like in low plank or chaturanga) Gaze forward and lift your feet. Keep squeezing.


5. Try to hold this pose for 15-30 seconds. Slowly come out and repeat with the other leg and arm.


 

All Level Tips

Beginner: Trying to placing a block underneath your heels


Intermediate: Try working on getting the entire palms of the hands flat together and bring the lifted foot behind the calf.

Advanced: Trying adding a revolve twist and get your elbow to come towards the lifted knee or transitioning into a side crow with just eagle legs.
